American Idol

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines an “Idol” as the following:
- 1: a representation or symbol of an object of worship ; broadly : a false god
- 2 a: a likeness of something bobsolete : pretender , impostor
- 3: a form or appearance visible but without substance <an enchanted phantom, a lifeless idol — P. B. Shelley>
- 4: an object of extreme devotion <a movie idol> ; also : ideal 25: a false conception : fallacy
So when Ryan Seacrest asks “who will the next American Idol be?” I wonder.
I mean - it sounds cool. It looks cool. The glamour of it all. American Idols can be created. Dreams can come true - we all can pick up the phone and text and collectively create someone to be worshipped. There’s genuine desperation and joy - there are tears and devastation. There is hope. There’s talent. There’s a journey.
Who can’t relate?
It’s hard not to be swept up in it. You find yourself either enchanted by the show itself or sympathetic to your fellow musicians. Combine this with a DVR and the show really only takes up about 35 minutes of your time once you zip through all the commercials, flashbacks and drawn-out suspenseful moments.
Still. I wonder what would be better to be than an Idol.
Could it be…writing for American Idol? Yes folks - there’s a song-writing competition. It will probably be opening in the next few weeks, so sharpen your pencils, brush up on your Miss America acceptance speeches for lyrical ideas - and go for it.
